Beaudry was a traitor, as was Linda. Oddly, Hopper didn’t blame them because he had the urge to follow her home too. This was all temporary, however, and he was quick to remind himself that Darby would leave again. She had a life in LA that didn’t include him. As much as that felt like salt on an old wound, he’d decided it best to set their differences aside – and by differences, he meant his own bruised ego and abandonment issues – to work together on something for Alice.

They might not have much in common anymore, but they had Alice. It was something and would make the time they had together more purposeful and would be a great distraction. Until she left. The idea left him feeling out of sorts. It was already happening. He was already preparing for her impending departure, quick to remind himself not to get attached, much less relaxed around her because that day would come.

The door chimed, grabbing Hopper's attention.

“Oh great,” he said under his breath before plastering on a fake smile. “Aunt Cady? Surprised to see you here. Don’t you normally meet the ladies at Reading Grounds for morning coffee?”

Cady O’Reilly was the Pine Valley royalty – the town mob boss, depending on how you wanted to look at it. She was highly respected in the community, had her hand in everything, and even had her own posse of sidekicks, which made up her old lady gang.

“Oh, sweet Hopper.” She patted his cheek before planting a kiss on it. “Aren’t you happy to see me?”

“Always.” He wasn’t lying. He loved his aunt dearly, but he also knew her, and showing up at the winery was out of character. Out of character meant up to no good. “Where are the ladies today?”

“Oh, they should be here any moment. Things in town were a little crowded, so I thought, why not drop by here, perhaps switch our morning meetup for something new. You’ve made a lot of progress out here, so I thought we’d check it out and see for ourselves what the town is raving about.”

“Little out of the way, isn’t it?” he questioned.

The winery was just outside of town, but it was out of the way if you consider that each of those women lived on the opposite side and had to pass their typical stomping grounds to get here. Cady was up to something, and Hopper had a sneaking suspicion he knew what it was…or who, rather.

“Not at all, dear. It’s nice to venture out and try new things,” she said, spinning on her heels to face the window. “I think we’ll take that corner table. All the natural lighting, the views from both windows. That’s our new spot.”

“New spot? You’ve already decided you’re coming back? The ladies aren’t even here yet.”

“Oh, we always agree on everything,” Cady said. When she said they all agree, she meant they agree with her because she was their ruthless leader after all.

Hopper followed Cady to the table.
